The World Through African Lenses

Durban is a UNESCO City of Literature situated on South Africa's picturesque eastern seaboard. It is a thriving, multicultural metropolis with global links through King Shaka International Airport.

The Durban Book Fair has been sustained since 2018 as a monthly first Sunday's programme in the city's iconic Mitchell Park. Managed by a volunteer cohort, it has grown into a respected platform for local and visiting writers as well as book dealers and publishers. The extended 2020 Durban Book Fair is modelled on similar initiatives around the world which combine literature with art, music and other cultural offerings to excite audiences about the book and storytelling.

The format will be a series of plenaries as well as thematic panels tentatively designed as follows:

 1. Freedom Struggles          2. Indigenous Languages   3. Oral Traditions                4. Writers with Disabilities

5. Youth Writers                   6. Gender-based Violence  7. Children's Writing           8. Cooking Literature

9. Worker Histories              10. Biographies of Place     11. Wildcards                       12. Sci-fi and Fantasy
